St. Mary's County Land Ownership: 1637-1799

Comments and Sources

All of the early land records of St. Mary's County were lost when the courthouse burned in 1832. This project attempts to recreate as much of this information as possible.

The use of land records, especially when marriage records are missing, is a valuable tool for researchers. The majority of the time, land went from family member to family member. In addition, by being able to place the property in its proper location will indicate who lived nearby. Remember that transportation in the early days was limited and people generally married someone in the neighborhood. It is unusual to find, for instance, someone from Resurrection Hundred marrying someone from St. Michael’s Hundred.

Every effort has been made to place the tracts in the proper Hundred, but we’re sure that some mistakes have occurred. In some cases, there was little or no information on the location of some of the tracts in the extant written records and in some cases, the original sources (listed below) contained errors as well.

The names of landowners and tracts have been standardized to the extent possible. In some cases, properties had several different names in which case they were assigned an "alias name". The "alias names" were grouped together and listed under the predominant name of the property. Then, of course, we have the issue of different properties being given the same name. For instance, there were three different parcels located in three different Hundreds, called "Rich Neck."

Additional information and corrections will, as always, be appreciated.
